A village etched out of the mountainside

The village of Guadalest was built by the Arabs on top of a rock literally 700 metres high. It occupies one of the most stunning positions in Spain, perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain from which vantage point you will enjoy the most spectacular views over the valley and the River from which the village takes its name.

The most famous building in the village is the whitewashed bell tower of Peñón de Alcalá, which if you look at any of the postcards of publicity pertaining to the area you'll see that it looks like its hanging-on for dear life to the mountain face.

The old village and castle with its famous scary dungeon are accessed through a tunnel carved out of the rock. And official tours of both are available to book. When you reach the other end and you see first hand all the ancient houses and buildings on the other side you will be totally amazed, feeling as if you've literally made a journey back in time.

Guadalest offers a wide range of small museums and little craft shops that sell the local specialities such as pottery, wine and honey. There are also an abundance of souvenir outlets with ideas for you to take back from your visit.
