day trips, Calpe

The Costa Blanca's Rock of Gibraltar.

A twenty minute drive along the coast from Benidorm, Calpe is yet another sea side resort that boasts an enormous rock jutting out over the sea. This volcanic boulder towers to over 335 meters and is in fact the largest rock in the Mediterranean. Calpe is also a Nature Reserve owing to the rare plants found there and the colonies of sea birds that live there.

The town of Calpe was originally a fishing village, however, it has grown to embrace tourism and accept a large influx of European residents over recent years. It is still famous for its fish market which is held at the port every afternoon and a buzzing Saturday market in the town centre.

Three golden beaches provide the makeup of Calpe, each with its own modern promenade. These are lined with literally dozens of international café bars and restaurants allowing you to wander the full length of the seafront, taking in the large marina and the old fishing port.

For the best views of the town, you can actually hike up the rock, passing through a tunnel carved out of stone on route to the top. From here the view is quite spectacular and on a clear day there's even a good chance of spotting Ibiza! However, if you suffer from vertigo or just don't have the energy, then you can explore the rock from the comfort of the little ferryboat that regularly sails around it.
